The Fmx Awards 2010 - Robbie Maddison Best International FMX Rider

The worldwide FMX scene voted Red Bull's Robbie Maddison as the Best International FMX Rider in 2009. The Australian FMX athlete was also nominated for the FMX Awards in the category “Best Australian FMX Rider” and made it on top of the Aussie riders as well.

For the first time in FMX Awards history the users had the chance to vote for the Best American, Best African and Best Asian FMX Rider. Jeremy Stenberg won the category “Best American FMX Rider”, Alastair Sayer “Best African FMX Rider” and Eigo Sato “Best Asian FMX Rider”.

Remi Bizouard, winner of the NIGHT of the JUMPs/FIM Freestyxle MX World Championship series has been voted for the Best European FMX Rider of the Year. Levi Sherwood is Best International FMX Rookie 2009 and Petr Pilat is Europe’s Rookie of the year. This year the users choice for Best German FMX Rider went to Fabian Bauersachs. Gemany’s Rookie of the Year is Kai Haase.

The users choice for the best FMX Event/Series felt to the Red Bull X-Fighters followed by the NIGHT of the JUMPs series. Best FMX Bike 2009 was the KTM 250. Finally Travis Pastrana ruled the categories Best Riders Website and the Best Trick Innovation with his 360 Backflip.

The FMX Awards were established in 2006 by Berlinièros Sports Agency to honor the world's best Freestyle Motocross riders. Annually it awards FMX competitors who have been outstanding during the previous year.

There was a two-part voting process to find the winners: Firstly, a Selection Panel of FMX experts and leading FMX editors, writers and broadcasters from several countries voted to create a shortlist of max. five nominations in each category.

2009 the expert group consisted of Jason Moriarty (FMX Judge, Pro Rider), Jimmy Verburgh (FMX4Ever), Jose Gaspar (fmxnews.com.br/Brazil), Jörg Hotzel (IFMXF - NIGHT of the JUMPs), Oliver Franke (Berlinièros Sports Agency), Marek Rejman (GSMA, Gladiator Games), Marko Manthey (IFMXF - NIGHT of the JUMPs), Ryan Leba (FMX-Blog - ESPN), Marko Roth (Wrecking Crew, FMX Judge), Soeren Sellmer (IFMXF – NIGHT of the JUMPs), Wolfgang Brandt (motoX/Germany) and Tobias Hannig (forty8.de).

Thor Update - Valkenswaard GP

Thor stands on the MX1 and MX2 podium in GP of the Netherlands
All four of the Thor supported Grand Prix stars were out in force under glorious blue skies at the Dutch GP this past weekend, held at the notoriously tough Valkenswaard circuit.




In the MX2 class the Pro Circuit Kawasaki duo of Van Horebeek and Frossard were both incredibly fast all weekend. Van Horebeek suffered a little bad luck in the first moto, where a first turn crash left him coming through the pack. The second moto was much better for the young Belgian who raced hard to cross the finish line in a superb 4th position. Frossard enjoyed his best ever ‘sand’ GP, dispelling any myths of the French riders being no good in the sand. Riding two superb races, the Thor rider took a 4th and 3rd, earning him a step on the overall podium.



In the MX1 class a tough weekend left Aprilia factory rider Coppins a little disappointed after a crash in moto 1 left him on the sidelines. A solid race in moto 2 revived his spirits though as Coppins crossed the line in a hard ridden 9th position. David Philippaerts enjoyed better luck as he put the distinctive black and white ‘Core’ gear up towards the front in both motos.

In moto 1 Philippaerts enjoyed a good battle with Steve Ramon for 2nd place honors, the two ex-world champs exchanged blows for over 20 minutes of the race. In the end Philippaerts got the upper hand crossing the line to take the 2nd place in front of 22 000 cheering fans. Moto 2 was another superb race for Philippaerts, who at one stage was leading the race. In the end a few small mistakes relegated the Italian star to 4th, but with two good results Philippaerts was back on the podium with a smile on his face.



Steven Frossard: “I am so happy with this weekend. I have never had such a good GP in the sand. The training and progress that has been made is just great, the bike was awesome and I felt very comfortable in both races. Now we head to some hard-packed circuits where I will be pushing for a win.”

David Philippaerts:"I am really happy today but I made mistakes in Bulgaria and Mantova so this should not have been my first podium of the season; mistakes are part of the sport and today things went well. In the second moto I was pleased to get the holeshot and lead at the start. I was riding good but the track was very difficult and bumpy. I did not want to crash so I was not pushing over the limit. Leok passed me on the last lap but it was OK; I still made it up on the podium."

All four riders will now begin preparations for the GP of Portugal which takes place on the 9 May at the spectacular Agueda circuit.

FANTASTIC WIN FOR LAVERTY

PARKALGAR HONDA’S Eugene Laverty won his second race of the season in commanding style at the fourth round of the World Supersport Championship at Assen in Holland – his second win at the circuit in two-years.

Miguel Praia lifted his game from 15th on the grid to finish a well-deserved 10th by the chequered flag. The next race is at Monza in Italy in two weeks time on Sunday, 9th May. Follow the progress of Eugene on www.eugenelaverty.com

Eugene: “That was a fantastic race for me; I did not expect to ride away with it. As the race went on my lap times came down and my Parkalgar Honda got better and better. Whenever Joan passed me I hit straight back and was able to ride away, which made for an easier last lap compared to when I won here last year. Thank you to everyone in the Parkalgar Honda team, they have done a fantastic job with my bike at the workshops and here at the track, we have got more out of the bike and that is what has given us victory.”

Miguel: “At the end of the day 10th is not such a bad result. In warm up we changed the bike to the same setting as Parkalgar after I had been struggling through the fast corners and immediately felt more comfortable. I was able to lap consistently which is what we wanted and knew we could be in contention for the top 10. I simply got in my rhythm and my Parkalgar Honda bike and team were fantastic. It has helped my Championship position and with two weeks before the next race I will have time to totally heal my wrist and ankle and will be stronger at Monza.”

Simon Buckmaster, Parkalgar Honda Team Manager: “That was a great day for Parkalgar Honda and just what we needed after two tough rounds. Eugene was brilliant and did his fastest time on the penultimate lap which is impressive. Miguel came through in the race after a hard couple of days practice and qualifying and it is good that he got a top 10 finish. He has got some of his fight back and looks better for it. A brilliant team effort from Parkalgar Honda and we will go from here with plenty of optimism for the coming rounds.”

Ryan Dungey Captures 2010 AMA Supercross Championship

Ryan Dungey achieved the unbelievable...the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship in his rookie season! Only one rider had previously won the title his first year, that being the "King of SX", Jeremy McGrath.

Ryan moved up to the première SX class after winning the 2009 Western Regional Lites Supercross & 250cc National Motocross Championships. He also became the hero of the 2009 Motocross of Nations in his first effort at the event on the mainly untested 450 machine. Coming into the 2010 SX season hopes were high to say the least.

Dungey prepared himself with dedication & focus and proved he had the speed right out of the gate leading Anaheim1 for 17 laps and ultimately finishing 2nd to the reigning SX Champion. The following week in Phoenix, Ryan would win his first of 5 SX Main Events. This past Saturday night, Dungey showed the world he's for real when he secured the title with 2 races remaining.

Ryan joins an esteemed list of Fox athletes that have won SX Championships. In fact since 1995, Fox riders have captured 10 Supercross Championships. No other brand has more than two...

Congratulations Ryan to your first of hopefully many SX Championships.

Etnies Update : JUSTIN BRAYTON TAKES THIRD AT AMA SUPERCROSS IN SEATTLE

Catching Up With Andrea Dovizioso

While taking a tour of the soon to be opened Valeri Sport Megastore in Cornuda, northern Italy, Andrea Dovizioso took time out to have a chat with Alpinestars about his awesome start to the season in Qatar and his feelings on the rest of the MotoGP season.

Alpinestars: First of all Andrea, congratulations on your great third place finish in Qatar.

AD: Thank you very much, I am really happy with the result and hopefully there is more to come! It was a hard race but we fought well and I was very happy to score third place for myself and my team.

Alpinestars: After the first race do you feel Honda is going in the right direction with the development of the RC212V?

AD: For sure I feel we are definitely going in the right direction, compared to last year we are much more competitive but the bike is still far from perfect. We were able to fight for the third position but we are still not at the top level as some of the other teams. I am sure that during the season we will come closer and for the first race it was a good result for Honda.

Alpinestars: Do you feel your decision to change to Ohlins suspension at the end of last year was a good one?

AD: Definitely yes. Straight away I felt comfortable with the Ohlins suspension and was able to work well with the technicians to help setup the bike for my style, the technicians were able to understand what I needed from the beginning. Now we also have data that will help us when we visit the tracks where I raced with Ohlins last year.

Alpinestars: So you’re confident about the season ahead?

AD: Yes I am confident but I also realize we have to work extra hard to match Yamaha and Ducati. Our engine is very strong and the bike is improved from last year but we need to make sure we are competitive at all the circuits and everyone is working hard to make this happen.

Alpinestars: What are your thoughts about the new Valeri Sport store?

AD: I have never seen a store like this, it is fantastic and the owners have done a great job. I only wish I had something like this where I live!

Villa New FMX Hero as 42,000 Defy Rain

Norway’s Andre Villa pulled off a surprise win at the first stop of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 in Mexico City on Friday evening. With the main event forced to be abandoned due to extreme weather conditions, the Norwegian used his win in Qualifying to claim victory in the city’s Plaza de Toros Monumental.

MEXICO CITY (MEX). A huge 42,000-strong crowd packed the arena to cheer on the twelve FMX toreros on their high-octane steeds as they flew through the largest bullfighting ring in the world. On kickers catapulting the athletes 15 metres into the air, the best riders on the planet - including Corinth Canal and Tower Bridge hero, Robbie Maddison (AUS) - showcased the very latest freestyle motocross tricks.

The first stop of the Red Bull X-Fighters 10th anniversary year saw a Norwegian rider win an event for the first time. Andre Villa benefitted from freak weather conditions including torrential rain and lightning to take the win after the competition had to be abandoned after the first round. “I have trained hard my whole life and made so many sacrifices for this,” explained the delighted 27- year-old. The remaining spots on the podium went to reigning World Tour Champion Nate Adams (USA) and Robbie Maddison (AUS), with Spain’s Dany Torres taking fourth place despite being forced to land his tricks with just one hand due to a fractured wrist.

Nate Adams (USA) had warm words of congratulation for the victor: “Andre deserved to win here. When it comes to open-air sport, you have to live with the weather conditions. The heavy rain meant the landing hill was very slippery. I think the decision to abandon the competition was the right one.”

In just a few weeks time, on 14 May 2010, the Red Bull X-Fighters will get their chance for revenge at the second World Tour stop directly in front of the world-famous Sphinx in Giza, Egypt. Further stops in Moscow (RUS), Madrid (ESP), London (GBR) and Rome (ITA) complete the World Tour 2010.

In the last few years California has established itself as the Mecca of international freestyle motocross. As the clock ticks down to the first stop of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 in Mexico City, we check out at what makes riding on the West Coat so special.

LOS ANGELES (USA) Red Bull's Robbie Maddison (AUS), Andrè Villa (NOR), Mat Rebeaud (SUI), Levi Sherwood (NZL), Taka Higashino (JPA), Blake Williams (AUS), Rob Adelberg (AUS), Nate Adams (USA), Jeremy Stenberg (USA), Cameron Sinclair (AUS) –the phonebooks for the towns of Temecula and Valencia are like a Who’s Who of the international freestyle motocross scene. The past few years have seen riders from quite literally all four corners globe come to the West Coast to settle in California, creating a concentration of FMX talent in one place unheard of in other sports.

Upon arriving in Temecula, it only takes a matter of seconds to recognise why so many FMX athletes have set up their base in this quiet town south of Sun City. A desert-like climate ensures plenty of sunshine all year round, while large swathes of land make it an ideal place to transform a humble back garden into the ultimate personal FMX playground. All of the major manufacturers also have their factories in the region, so picking up new parts after a heavy landing is only a matter of a few minutes drive down the road. By the way: it is rumoured that X-ray doctors in the region have a job for life!

Reigning Red Bull X-Fighters Champion Nate Adams explains why California is the place to be: “If you’re not here, you want to be here! If you want to be in the mix all of the time then you’ve got to live here.” Riding, training and chilling with the best in the world gives the athletes a unique chance to exchange tips and advice their peers and work on creating new tricks together.

Among the other top riders to have found a new home from home in the USA are Norwegian star Andrè Villa, 2008 Red Bull X-Fighters Champion Mat Rebeaud, multiple-world record holder Robbie Maddison, and X-Games hero Blake Williams.

Whats made you want to put on this event?

Having loved the cool pro bmx dirt jumpers bbq jams over the years i always thought it be cool to do a freeride style mtb one but never found the right spot.

Mafia Compound being the right spot?
Its as good as we are going to get! I got asked to come and ride the compound two years ago and it has some cool little features packed in to a tiny bit of private land, Year later i came back and did some photos for Monster and Ewart and the local crew were adding a fun dual track, With this added feature i thought it be cool for a jam, Here we are a year later getting ready for the Mafia Mob Backyard BBQ Jam. Some senders, bit of "North Shore" style stunts, short twisted singletrack and the race track, (with a bit of luck we should also have a pump track built in time as well ).

Have you put on an event before?
Sure have, back in the day we ran the Vandal triple crown of BSX what got raved about by Dirt mag back in the day and then we ran with another guy the first national bsx/4x series called the Coalition cup with a trail jum run along side, Then a few years later we put on the first UK mtb only skate park event along with some Punk And Drunk nights.. Well I’m back and ready for 2010 in the NETT Quad Championship season riding the 50cc STD class and proud to be Associated with Freestylextreme once again. (Quality Products and Great Communications)

Round 1 @ Armthorpe Moto Park, DoncasterFirst time back at Armthorpe Moto Park, Doncaster since falling off here last year, but looking forward not back.
Great weather, track, brilliant days racing and came 3rd overall for the day, Well pleased with result and can’t wait till next race at Wooley Grange. Hopefully I’ll have some rear suspension that works due to a certain person who can’t ride and too heavy for my quad (DAD), He rides like I load the quad on to the trailer

Oops Dad might like to straighten the Track rods too..

Well back at Wooley Grange and not to keen on the track but with the new Rear Fox Shock supplied and modified to fit the Quad by MOJO SUSPENSION (the Uk’s only authorized Fox Racing Shox warranty service centre) www.mojo.co.uk . Using this round to set up the suspension but after my practice lap times being a lot better than last season none was needed. At last suspension that works, DAD KEEP OFF!!!!!!!

Excellent day, some very close racing throughout and another good result 3rd a gain for the day, time to relax with my friends.
