Japanese FMX Star Eigo Sato Dies In Freestyle Accident

We heard this news spreading on Twitter over the course of yesterday but it has now been confirmed by Red Bull and ESPN that Japanese Freestyle Motocross rider Eigo Sato, 34, has died following an accident on 28th February 2013.

It is thought that the rider died after under-rotating a backflip while training near his home in Iwaki City, Japan, for the forthcoming 2013 Red Bull X-Fighters. This year's X-Fighters has a tour stop in Osaka, Japan for the first time at the start of June.

Sato had made regular appearances in the X Games and at the Red Bull X-Fighters, finishing 5th in last year's X-Fighters. He also holds the position of being the first Japanese rider to complete a backflip, back in 2003.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. We're big fans of Eigo Sato at FreestyleXtreme and, even with something as dangerous as Freestyle Motocross, we'll never find it easy having to report a loss of someone from the sport that we love. RIP, Eigo Sato.
