BMX star Patrick Guimez may have only recently joined FreestyleXtreme’s stable of athletes but the talented action sports star has been at the forefront of the dirt jumping scene for the last two decades. More recently, Guimez has started hosting his own BMX show – Lords of Dirt – and even helped create coffee table magazine Art BMX. Find out more in our interview below!
Hi Patrick. We hear you are working on a new magazine called Art BMX. Can you tell us a little bit more about it?
We started the ART BMX mag just over a year ago. We wanted to create a real quality magazine with a world-wide vision of BMX. It’s a really interesting project which takes lots of time but in the end when you see the result you just can be happy about it. There are actually three people who own the mag but of course we get the help of many people to create the articles - the mag is a 148 pages!!
The first round of your show Lords of Dirt in the UK was sadly cancelled due to bad weather. What else has been happening for Lords of Dirt 2012?
For the first time we wanted to extend the tour in a foreign country and we choose to go to England. Unfortunately, due to a real bad weather we had to just turn the event into a best trick comp to get some results for the rest of the tour. So sad for our first experience in the UK, particularly as the jumps were just massive but be sure that Lords of Dirt 2 come back stronger and bigger!!!
But the tour is not over and we still have two stops to run, in Serignan (France) at the start of September at a brand new spot. There will be a crazy line-up of riders! The third and final stop on October 13th and 14th is in Fréjus during ROC D AZUR - one of the biggest bike shows in Europe! For some more info, just look for the Lordsofdirt tour Facebook!
So, you have a magazine, a show and an underwear brand to manage. Surely you don’t have much time for anything else?
For many years I just decided to push myself and create lots of things around my career. It’s not that easy everyday to ride and work at the same time but I’m not sleeping that much so I can work late! My main priority is my ride and I try to keep as much time as I can to ride and go to events. When you got that in your blood and your mind, nobody can take it away from you.
What inspired you to first ride BMX?
You know what, just by watching the Matt Hoffman video Head First. I understood that BMX was for me and I wanted to dedicate my life to BMX - something that I’ve done for 20 years now. I used to race a lot in the past but and was really fast but I was more into doing tricks and flying high so racing was not for me anymore haha. I became pro in 1997 and I’m still in the game. What else could make me more happy? 20 years more!
How long do you think you’ll keep riding BMX for?
That’s always the same question people ask me, haha. The only thing I’ll reply is that I’ll keep riding my bike as long as I can and keep having fun on it! BMX is a sport but more than everything, it s my life so If I can keep shredding many more years, I sign straight for it.
You had your birthday recently. Do you find it tough competing against riders who could be half your age? Does experience triumph over youth?
Hahaha yeah, I've just turned 33 mate! I don't even see the difference between those guys and me - I just see riders and that's it! Experience for sure is a big help during comps and I use it as much as I can - I rode so many events that I couldn't count them but I still love them. I just choose the ones I like the most and with the courses I like the best. The new generation is pushing the sport really hard and we just can be happy about it so , young guns, keep killing it, we are proud of you! But we keep progressing as well haha!
We loved your 20th anniversary video with Monster. Have you got any other mad stunts planned?
I have something that I’m preparing but I can’t tell you more about it now. It’s in progress and I think people will love it. It’s gonna fly a lot and spin!
Did you watch the BMX at the London Olympics? What did you make of it?
Of course I watched it and was pumped about it. I used to train racers and also I used to work with the French Olympic team. I have so much respect for them and for what they accomplish. Just sad that we didn’t get any medals for France ‘cause we deserved them!
Where in the world is your favourite place to ride?
I love France but I love to ride in Colombia as well. Of course, California is a dirt dream so each time I go I have as much fun as I can! Anywhere I go, I'll go with a good spirit. I'll have fun and enjoy it - so just keep smiling guys!
What do you think is the biggest achievement in your career so far?
I don’t know really. I try to enjoy every single minute I spend on my bike so maybe I’m yet to have my biggest! Until then, I’d say my 20 Year Anniversary video was hard work for a short time. I had to push myself hard to try other disciplines but my life is like this - I have to push myself always more and more so be sure that I’ll do something big in the future!
In case you didn't know, this weekend marks the biggest Motocross event of the year, the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. Taking place in Belgium, the event will see 33 nations come together for a weekend to officially decided which nation is best at Motocross.
This year the Belgian track of Lommel is hosting the event, having been held in France last year. Lommel is very much a Euro track, built in a natural sand bowl it's going to be a serious challenge for everyone competing. The USA have taken home the Chamberlain Trophy for the past 7 years, but this year is going to be one of the toughest challenges they've faced in a long time.

It's good to see Ken Block on the podium. No matter what people say, few drivers have the same varied global schedule as he does and the occasional victory has got to be satisfying for the hard-working Monster Energy World Rally Team. Even if the competition didn't really stand a chance.
Again, no discredit to KB's driving talent, just that when your competition included (according to the official entry list) a 1990 VW Golf Gti, a 1998 Mitsubishi EVO IV and a 2002 Subaru WRX you should bloody hope his $1/2 million Fiesta RS does well.
There are less than ten days until the most exciting motocross event of the year - the Motocross of Nations. Featuring two 2012 champions (Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli) getting a chance to go head-to-head, plus a line-up of racers that containing the best MX riders in the world, which team will emerge victorious is anyone's guess.
Team USA might have walked away with the win for the last seven years but the level of competition means there are no safe bets. We can't wait...

Holy crap there are some big falls in this video. Yesterday we brought you a compilation of Enduro crashes. Which mostly compromised of riders falling very hard on some very pointy object. This video, taken from various Red Bull Rampages over the years, show that the downhill MTB can fall off in spectacular style too.
Thankfully, this collection shows most of the riders walking away looking unharmed (that's the power of adrenaline for you). Apart from Josh Bender's massive drop at the start, of course. That left him with a broken back. Ouch...

Taking place at Hawkstone Park during the weekend of the Red Bull Pro Nationals, this stunt was filmed as part a 'Challenge Travis' event to promote the UK dates of Nitro Circus Live later on in the year.
This video doesn't give you too much of a back story about these three contestants got here (although you can find out more at the official Challenge Travis website) but all you need to know is that winner Natalya Platonova successfully survived this tandem back flip with FMX rider Josh Sheehan at the controls. Apparently, much to the relief of the insurance people at Red Bull, who suddenly realised the enormity of the consequences should such a trick go wrong...

The last time we saw San Francisco, it was with Ken Block behind the wheel of his 650 horsepower Ford Fiesta for Gymkhana 5. Although there are considerably less tyres shredded in this video and a bike with the power of a single man, we think that this shows that San Fran and Trials rider Danny MacAskill can create an equally great video with just as much of a demonstration of skill and control.
We're not sure how long Remington (who make hair grooming products) have been in the action sports game but if they continue to make videos of this calibre, we really don't care...
We are less than a month away from one of the most exciting downhill mountain bike freeride competition on Earth - the Red Bull Rampage. Rounding up the world's elite MTB riders, the contest on October 5th-7th in Virgin, Utah, is guaranteed to be as death-defyingly exciting as ever.
If you need any proof, check out this video, which looks back over the last 10 years of the Rampage at five of the most memorable moments, including winning runs Tyler Klassen back in 2002, Cedric Gracia in '03 and Kyle Strait in '04, plus epic moves from Gee Atherton and Cam Zink in 2010.
As Jamie himself points out, the last time most of us saw him was in the footage of him on a hospital bed after breaking his back in February. Not one to let the small matter of smashing up a few vertebrae put him off, Squibb is now fully recovered and back in action, showing off the skills in his compound that won him the Big Air Jam title back in June.

How does it feel to be classed as one of a very exclusive list of Wikipedia’s ‘notable people from Redcar’?
It’s great I love where I come from. Every time I come home from being away for a while it is always a great feeling. All my friends live here and I have lived here my whole life, in the same street, I even bought my own house in the same street.
You’ve got a reputation for pushing yourself and your bike to the limits. Do you think that fearlessness gives you the edge?
Not at the moment I don’t! I am just in the process of rehabilitating my shoulder! When I am riding I just ride how I have always ridden since when I first started. I wouldn't say it is fearless at all. I scare myself sometimes. Not telling you when though!
British sports personalities tend to have a lot of pressure piled on them by fans but we’re yet to find anyone who has anything bad to say about you.
I think it’s because I am just a normal kid from a normal working class background - me and my family and all the people around me have worked very hard for what we have. I have the same circle of friends I had before I won worlds nothing has changed. Just a lad from Redcar who likes to ride and race bikes!
Have there been any disadvantages to wearing the World Champion’s rainbow jersey so far?
At the start of the year in South Africa I had a bad race, and everyone said 'Oh it’s the curse of the rainbow jersey'. I let that get to me a little bit much, but then I went to Val Di Sole and raced like I do, didn't get the best result, but it was a step in the right direction. Then I got on the podium at the next three World Cups. I love riding in it.
We must have watched the video of your run at Champery commentated by Rob Warner a dozen times now. What do you make of it?
It's great I love watching it, if I am ever having a bad day, I get YouTube up and have a deek at it.
You’ve got your own bike now (The Giant Glory 0). How much input did you have into the construction of the bike?
Me and my mechanic and have worked extremely hard to get my bike working great, and I believe we have done a great job and relayed all that back to the Giant HQ in California. Now you can go out and buy my bike pretty much.
Can we expect to see any other Danny Hart merchandise?
Not for the time being I am just working on getting back to good health with my shoulder, but who knows in the future.
We’ve seen a few videos of you tearing things up on a Motocross bike too. Any temptation to pursue MX any further?
Not for the moment I have lots of friends who are top level MX riders, and I would love to one day, but I can't see that being any time soon.
As the reigning Downhill World Champion, what else do you hope to achieve in your career?
Win lots more, no better feeling than winning a race!
What does it mean to you to be part of Fox Racing’s team of athletes?
It’s great I love it, it is like one big family, all great friends!
If anyone had any doubts about the popularity of BMX dirt jumping, then you need simply look at the massive crowds who attended the second round of Lords of Dirt at the weekend.
Created and organised by FreestyleXtreme athlete and BMX legend Patrick Guimez, the Lords of Dirt event is now in its 6th year, with the most recent stop at Sérignan, France, attracting 40 riders from 12 different countries.
After some fantastic displays of talent, it was Californian Mike ‘Hucker’ Clark who emerged victorious. The young shredder simply killed the set of jumps all weekend, wowing the audience with a smile on his face. Paul Langlands from New Zealand took second after some insane runs, proving that the occasionally windy conditions were far from a problem for him. In fact, his 2nd place means he is now currently leading the tour! Third on the podium was native rider JB Peytavit, who the French audiences will have to count on for a home victory on the run up to the final round!
The Best Trick prize was shared by Paul Langlands and JB Peytavit (with a 360 super seat to down whip and a 360 bike flip respectively, with UK rider Ryan Taylor snatching 3rd with his truck driver to downside whip.
The final round of Lord of Dirt will be taking place at Roc d’Azur, during the famous French MTB festival in Fréjus 12th-14th October. In the meantime, take a look at some of the photos Patrick sent us. Looks like he even found some time to take some pictures of the action in between partying and photographing pretty girls in the crowd!

At the weekend, FreestyleXtreme athlete and ParkinGO Team Aprilia rider Chaz Davies picked up his first World Superbike victory. The same day he announced a move to the BMW Motorrad Team for the 2013 season. So, we thought we would get the lowdown with an exclusive interview with the talented Welshman...
How does it feel to pick up your first victory in a World Superbike race?
It feels amazing but it's not quite sunk in yet! I didn't expect to win a race in my rookie WSBK season so it came as quite a surprise.

You won at Nurburgring by an impressive margin too. Everything must have gone well?
Yeah everything worked great on race day. In race one I didn't get a good start but my pace was on par with the leaders after a few laps so I knew that in race 2 if I could just get away well then there was no reason I couldn't fight for the win. I went from 10th to 5th in turn one and new right away that I'd given myself the opportunity to stay in the front group. From the early laps I was concerned about tyre life so I was being careful not to spin the tyre too hard and it definitely payed off before once i built up a gap I was able to control the race and felt really comfortable. It was one of them race days when everything just seemed to go right!
For a rider reportedly told to take it easy in his first WSBK season, you don’t seem to be hanging about!
We've come a long way this season to get to this point but yeah, like I said before I never expected to win a race this season. WSBK is a tough class with great competitors that have a lot of experience. We had a really tough start to the year with injuries and bucket loads of bad luck but we've kept working hard and I've learnt how to ride this bike so it's all developed quite naturally.

Must have been bittersweet for the ParkinGO team after the news about your move to BMW?
It definitely is bitersweet because for the last 3 years ParkinGO have been like a family to me. We've had some great results and I've established myself as a World class rider with them so for that I owe them a lot. But obviously next years prospects of being in the Factory BMW team are extremely exciting. I get great vibes from all the BMW guys that I've met so far and ParkinGO are 100% being my decision to move on into a factory team so the future is looking pretty bright!
BMW Motorrad is a relatively new team in the WSBK and only scored its first win earlier this year. Asides from the obvious benefits from being in a factory team, what prompted you to ride for them over others?
That's one of the exciting things and a reason behind my decision to move to BMW for next year, they haven't long re-introduced themselves to motorcycle road racing and are running up the front every week. They are hungry to keep developing the bike and seem to get stronger and stronger each week.
What do you think it will be like have Melandri as a team mate?
It will be tough, that's for sure! Marco is a quality rider and will definitely be a benchmark for me. I'll be going into next year like always, open minded, willing to learn and ready for the challenge.
Do you think competition will be fiercer with him now you will be on the same bike?
No, I don't think so. WSBK is too competitive to get fixated on beating one person because there is always another 25 people to worry about!
Of the 63 editions of Motocross des Nations - now known as the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations - Team USA has won 22 times since 1947. With its 2012 team, America has every chance to make it another win. Potentially for 7th consecutive year.
The carefully selected team will consist of Ryan Dungey (who has been part of the all-star trio for since 2009), Blake Baggett and Justin Barcia. Few will disagree this isn't a formidable partnership.
Taking place in Lommel, Belgium on the 29th-30th September, the MXoN will see 129 riders from 33 countries compete in what many call the 'Olympics of Motocross' and will feature the best MX riders in the world competing for this illustrious. You can take a look at the list of competitors here:
As you'll see, Team USA won't have everything its own way. With the likes of Tommy Searle, Ken Roczen, Antonio Cairoli, Clement Desalle, Jeffrey Herlings and Marvin Musquin also competing, predicting which team will bring home the win is by no means pre-determined...
The Samsung Honda team scored a double podium finish at Donington Park, as FreestyleXtreme athlete Michael Laverty claimed a third and second place at the ninth round of the British Superbike Championship.
Laverty finished third in the opening race after working his way up the order from tenth on the grid before challenging for the final podium positions and then following some changes for race two he stormed up the order to fight for the lead before finishing second. Jon Kirkham showed strong once again and took another pair of top ten finishes with a seventh and ninth place.
Michael Laverty: “These have been solid results though I gave myself a lot of work with the tumble and third row start for the first race but after a poor start I was back in the hunt and scoring a podium credit point. In the second race I made a little mistake and that gave Josh Brookes half a second. He rode strongly all weekend but we worked hard and going into the Showdown and I am looking forward to going to Assen.”
Havier Beltran, Team Manager: “It has been an interesting weekend and of course it was great for Michael to have had two podium finishes. He came back stronger in race two with some improvements between the races but we still have some work to do for Assen... We will be ready to take up the challenge.” It was also a great weekend for Welsh rider and fellow FreestyleXtreme rider Chaz Davies, who secured his first ever victory in the World Superbike Championships at the Nurburgring circuit and headed an all-British top five finish.
With championship contenders Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri crashing out, it left Davies free to secure a comfortable victory with a lead that exceeded three seconds.
Chaz Davies: " What a feeling! I got an average start and went the long way round at the first corner. It was risky but it worked and I was fourth. I was comfortable all race, and knew if I could just get away with the front guys I thought I could stay and that was the case, but I didn’t expect them the mistakes from Marco and Max! In the end it was just a concentration game with myself, keeping the lap times consistent. What a way to repay the ParkinGo team for their efforts!”
Congratulations again to Chaz, as it was also announced over the weekend that he will be partnering with Melandri for the BMW Motorrad in the 2013 season.
It doesn't matter whether you call it Tartan, Gingham, Flannel, Checked or Plaid (that's pronounced 'plad', in case you were wondering) - it's all effectively the same thing and it's a pattern that has served both men and women very well for many years.

Life in the Foust Lane is rapidly becoming one of my favourite web series. While a lot of shows seem slightly contrived, arranging things for the sake of the cameras, Foust clearly has this epic lifestyle that takes him around the globe doing cool things in cars. If he presented Top Gear as well, he might well have the best job in the world...*checks Wikipedia*... Ah. He does present the US version of Top Gear. Lucky bastard.
In this episode, Tanner goes to the Ford Test Track in Lommel, Belgium, drives a Pick-Up Truck around the Nurburging, goes Karting and sticks it to the Brits with a convincing win in the European Rallycross (the good version of Rallycross) at Lydden Hill.

A few weeks ago, we went to Fox Racing's European HQ. We'd love to say that it was in a super secret location but a simple Internet search reveals it's actually in Tyne and Wear, UK.

It's a busy year for the Nitro Circus crew in 2012, what with the Nitro Circus 3D movie, recent tour of Australia and brand new European tour in November. While the most exciting action might happening on the Gigant-O-Ramp, there is still a story to be told behind the scenes.

Tommy Searle might have put on a great display for his home fans at Matterley Basin at the previous round of the FIM Motocross World Championship but Dutch rider Jeffrey Herling gave everybody a real lesson in domination at the GP of Netherlands at Lierop.
In the first race, Herlings lapped every rider up to his 2nd place (and up to fifth place in the next race) lapping several seconds quicker than Cairoli in the class above, proving that he is a total machine when riding in the sand. His performance certainly makes him our hot favourite for the forthcoming Motocross of Nations, that's for sure...
If you haven't heard about Gymkhana GRID before now, this driving competition rounds up some of the most skilled wheelsmen in Europe and pits them head-to-head on timed drift and technical courses, with the eventual aim of taking on Ken Block himself. Sure, KB will be in his $1million Ford Fiesta HSHV and his competition is likely to be in an old Nissan 200SX beater but if you've got the talent, you could still use Gymkhana GRID to show the Hoonigan himself how it's done!
The second round of the competition recently took place at the UK Trax Car Show at Silverstone where, as you can see from this video, spectators were treated to some impressive displays of driving skills. With two more rounds to go (in Germany and Holland), the final will be taking place at the Flame and Thunder Shows at Santa Pod Raceway in the UK on 27th and 28th October.

Over the weekend, South African rider Greg Minnaar picked up his second UCI Downhill World Championship title with an incredible, down-to-the wire performance.

After watching this episode of OPWP, I'm starting to get the feeling that everybody thinks the Global Rallycross is tragically lame - even the drivers.
Once again, we are all reminded that those useless plastic barriers are a constant source of race-ending frustration and that the jumps are more to give the illusion of excitement rather than add anything of to a race. Oh, apart from when they are so badly thought out they hospitalise the drivers. What's the point holding a race on a NASCAR track in rally cars if they aren't event allowed to leave a trace of dirt or a single scratch on the cirucuit? It's not like there isn't decent off-road terrain in America. Come on GRC, pull your bloody finger out.
Still, much respect for Pastrana in this episode, who managed to race two back-to-back events with barely the time to sign a few baseball caps in between. No wonder he's so skinny.
FreestyleXtreme catches up with Unit Clothing athlete and Swiss freestyle motocross star Mat Rebeaud and chats to him about Red Bull X Fighters, the new wave of FMX talent and some of his plans for the future...
Both your father and grandfather rode motocross and you got into it yourself at an early age. If you have kids, will you be encouraging them to follow in your footsteps?
I don’t have kids yet but if/when I do and if they want to do it I will help them as much as I possibly can, the same way my Father helped me.
We’ve noticed you have spent a lot of time passing your FMX wisdom to the younger generation. What made you decide to do events like the Red Bull Under My Wing?
I love the sport a lot and I want to make sure its gets passed on to the next wave of riders coming up.
Has anything surprised you about the young talent?
How eager they are to learn and how each generation’s starting point is higher than the one before it.
You’ve won a world tour and you are one of the most prolific competitors at the Red Bull X Fighters. What keeps bringing you back?
I love competition and the thrill of performing in front of an enthusiastic audience.
What do you think of riders like Levi Sherwood? He seems to be winning everything this year!
Levi and I are good friends and we’ve spent a lot of time together so I think I know him pretty well and he’s a special rider who really focuses on his technique and style and it really comes through in his performance. I still want to beat him though!
Your Free4Style event in Switzerland is as popular with the crowds as the riders. What makes it special for you?
The first thing is that it’s so close to where I live that I can ride my bike there. I don’t get to “ride to work” too often. The spirit of the event is really cool and the setting is beautiful and it continues to grow and grow so it’s something we really look forward to every year and a lot of riders want to come ride it for the experience.
You last picked up an X Games medal in 2008. Do you hope to get to any other X Games events in the future?
I sure do, I think I have unfinished business in Speed and Style and I’m looking forward to FMX coming back to big courses in 2014. I feel like I have a lot left in me and when I see a rider like Eigo Sato who is a few years older than me still being competitive at Red Bull X Fighters I know I can be too.
What other plans do you have for the future?
I have a big “first time” project that I want to do in 2013 or 2014 but I can’t tell you what it is yet.

I met Paul Everest who is one of the founders and we ride together and I think we both realised we had a similar philosophy and it was a great match.
