We're constantly adding new brands to the FreestyleXtreme site and Downhill MTB clothing company
The Brakes is the latest to our ranks.
As such a new brand on the scene (it first started selling just a few months ago), we thought we would take the time to chat to the founders Simon and Luke to find out more about how The Brakes came to by and why Mountain Biking fans will want these clothes in their lives:
How was The Brakes Clothing Company established?
The Brakes was established by me (Simon) and my long-time friend Luke. We had always talked about doing something together, something that could enable us to get out and ride more. Last year whilst out riding some single-track, a tree had grown out at an angle and obstructed the trail and Luke hit the tree head-on. To cut a long and gnarly story short his C3, C4 and C5 [vertebrae] in his neck were broken and the T7 in his back was crushed. Just millimetres from an unspeakable outcome he was lucky to have to wear a body brace four months.
The summer months slipped by, with no riding and just beers, pizza and afternoon sessions of shows like Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and The Sopranos to occupy us. I headed off to Ericeria in Portugal for a family holiday, and as hokey as this sounds, whilst walking the beach I saw a stone that looked like a bike saddle. A Eureka moment ensued and the idea of starting a Casual Clothing company for Mountain Bikers was born. I was on the blower to Luke back in England and needless to say he was stoked with the idea!
Are you riders yourselves?
Yes- we love riding… We don’t really pigeon hole our style to one discipline but if we had to it would be AM (All Mountain).
What is the concept behind the brand? Do you have a company ethos?
We want people who wear our products to be able to show their love for all things mountain biking; we feel there isn’t a brand out there that does this. To provide clothing for the thriving MTB scene, with style, quality and ground breaking designs. We will support the scene, with sponsorships, events and some killer parties!
Where do you get inspiration from for your designs and slogans? A particular favourite of ours is the ‘Dirty Harry’ tee…
We draw our inspirations from the passion of the scene, the bike parts, the corners on the trail, the surroundings we interact with whilst out on our bikes, and the great people we meet though it.
As for the iCONS tee, this came from an idea that it would be cool to take iconic people from the past and present and turn them into riders- watch for future takes on this as we have plans to make this an on-going collection.
What sort of response have you had from riders?
We went on a European tour from May – June, we had a stand at Dirtmasters, Out of Bounds, Val di Sole and Fort William. We met with many high profile riders and had nothing but positive vibes from all of them, which was really humbling. Watch this space as in the off-season we will be discussing who will join us for the 2013 season.
At the moment, The Brakes is mainly a range of Tees. Are there any plans to create other garments, like caps and hoodies?
We are currently in the design stages and will be releasing hoodies, caps and beanie’s this Fall/Autumn. Next spring we will be adding shorts and shirts too.
Can you give us any hints about any exciting ideas or designs you have for future ranges?
We are currently mid-way through designing our next nine T-Shirt designs, and we have some real gems. We don’t want to give too much away but if you like what we have now, you will love what’s coming!
I can tell you that we have recently secured the services of one of the UK’s most exciting MTB videographers Gee Milner. He will shoot two edits and The Brakes will be providing merchandise for his highly anticipated full-length feature Boundless.
Would you like to create any technical riding clothing in the future or would you prefer to keep it casual?
